Jake
“He was fairly asymptomatic at first.”
But life got much harder when the infection progressed into Long Covid.
After back-to-back conjunctivitis and tonsillitis, Jake was struggling to make a full week of school. And when he did return after a course of antibiotics, he was often sent home on a Friday due to exhaustion. After painful feelings of heartburn - not to mention his throat felt like a “volcano” - Jake started suffering from gastritis. Worryingly, this caused him to vomit every time he ate. Chronic fatigue would follow as he spent the first half of the summer holidays resting.
Things started to improve in September and Jake was able to attend the first five weeks of school. But after being stung by a bee, the symptoms returned - and far worse than before.
The result was that Jake missed around 50% of his lessons in 2021. Consequently, while his parents used to work full time, Jake’s dad now only manages around 25 hours a week. It’s the only way they can look after their son during the day.
So what’s the goal Jake’s family are working toward?
It’s simple: for their son to be able to return to his classes without becoming completely exhausted. To have some energy for after-school activities and time with his friends - without having a huge crash afterwards. To simply feel well again.
