“He was positive for 20 days.”
But little did Ben’s family know, this was just the beginning of their child’s journey with COVID.
Since October 2021, Ben has been battling the long-term effects of the illness. And this meant he ended up missing massive chunks of his education. In fact, throughout October and December that year, Ben attended no classes at all. Struggling to feel well enough to go in, he missed most of the Spring Term of January 22 too.
However, although the doctor diagnosed Ben with Long Covid, it was hard to make the school understand at first. Even when the reality was that Ben was just too exhausted to concentrate throughout a whole day of classes.
Worse still, there seemed to be little that medical professionals could do to alleviate his symptoms. Even with a proper diagnosis, no treatment was offered. Suffering from day-to-day exhaustion, the only thing that has helped is sleep and rest.
Much like the prospect of a negative COVID test when Ben first became infected, full recovery feels a long way off yet. It’s just about taking things one more day at a time for now.
